Manchester United have confirmed Michael Carrick as their permanent manager, bringing an end to weeks of speculation over the club’s long-term coaching plans. Carrick, who took charge on a caretaker basis in January following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim, has signed a contract running until 2028 with the option of a further 12 months.

How The Decision Was Made

Chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox formally recommended Carrick for the permanent role before presenting their case to minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who holds final authority over football matters at the club. Ratcliffe has approved the appointment, though sources indicate the decision was a considered one rather than an immediate consensus within the club’s ownership group.

United had been assessing other candidates throughout Carrick’s caretaker spell. England manager Thomas Tuchel chose to remain in his current role while Paris Saint-Germain head coach Luis Enrique was also considered but stayed committed to the French club. With those options unavailable and Carrick’s own record making a strong case, the club’s leadership moved toward confirming him as permanent head coach.

Carrick’s Record Since Taking Charge

The numbers behind Carrick’s caretaker spell were central to the decision. He took charge with United sitting seventh in the Premier League and guided them to third place, securing Champions League qualification in the process. Across 15 matches he won 10, drew three and lost just twice. No Premier League manager collected more points during the same period.

His early results set the tone immediately. Carrick won each of his first four matches in charge, including victories over title contenders Manchester City and Arsenal. A seven-game unbeaten run was eventually ended in March but he responded with important wins over Champions League rivals Aston Villa, Chelsea and Liverpool in the weeks that followed. United currently sit six points ahead of Liverpool with two games remaining in the Premier League season.

Players Who Thrived Under Carrick

Bruno Fernandes produced some of the best football of his Manchester United career during Carrick’s tenure, finishing the season with 19 Premier League assists and winning the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year award. Young players Kobbie Mainoo and Amad Diallo also impressed significantly during this period.

Several senior players privately expressed support for Carrick being given the job permanently. Darren Fletcher noted publicly that Carrick’s presence had been particularly inspiring for the club’s younger players. Carrick has also been praised internally for his commitment to United’s youth development programme and his involvement in recruitment discussions during the caretaker period.

The Context Behind The Appointment

Ratcliffe and INEOS were keen to avoid repeating past mistakes in their managerial decision making. The decision to hand Erik ten Hag a new contract following the FA Cup final victory over Manchester City in 2024, only to sack him less than three months into the following season, had drawn significant criticism. Senior figures were determined this time to assess Carrick’s impact thoroughly before confirming their choice.

Beyond the results, United’s leadership evaluated Carrick’s tactical work, his management of the dressing room and the atmosphere he had rebuilt at the club’s Carrington training complex. Those factors, alongside the on-pitch performances, formed the basis of the recommendation made to Ratcliffe.

Carrick previously served as United’s temporary manager for three games following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s dismissal in 2021 before returning to first-team coaching elsewhere. He spent 12 years at United as a player, winning five Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League under Sir Alex Ferguson.
