Cole Palmer will not be available to Chelsea for three weeks.
The decision to withdraw him from England duty for muscle load management leaves Xabi Alonso without his most productive creator while the Premier League schedule continues. Palmer has four goals and two assists in seven appearances this season. Removing that output changes the shape of Chelsea’s attack.
Alonso’s system has relied on two advanced creators. Palmer occupied one of those roles. The other has largely belonged to Morgan Rogers. Rogers already has three goals and one assist. Without Palmer, Rogers becomes the primary reference point in the half-spaces and the player most likely to dictate tempo in the final third.
João Pedro remains the next most important piece when fit. He has six Premier League goal involvements already this season (three goals, three assists). His ability to drop and link gives Alonso a different profile from Palmer’s more vertical, shooting-first game. Pedro’s recent knee issue means he cannot be assumed every match.
Estevão has not started a Premier League game this season. The Brazilian has been used only from the bench while the established front three has been hard to break. Three weeks without Palmer is the clearest opportunity yet for regular minutes, either as a pure No. 10 or on either flank.
Pedro Neto and Jamie Gittens provide width and direct running. If Alonso wants to stretch the pitch rather than congest the centre, both can play high and wide. The deeper midfield options still at the club (Moisés Caicedo, Romeo Lavia and others) will need to push progressive passes higher to compensate for the missing creative volume.
The numbers so far show concentration risk. Of Chelsea’s ten Premier League goals this season, only one has not involved Palmer, Rogers or Pedro as scorer or provider. Levi Colwill stated the obvious after the Brentford defeat: the rest of the team must contribute more. The international break is the first real test of that claim.
Alonso now has three weeks to answer a practical question. Does the system still create when its most decisive individual is missing, or does it wait for Palmer to return?
